PointsBet looks to collaboration gains with new operator-focused RG survey
US sportsbook partners with NCPG and Massachusetts Council on Gaming and Health on new initiative which puts respondents in the shoes of an operator
PointsBet has called for increased collaboration between US operators on responsible gambling (RG) issues, using data from a new survey to highlight best practice solutions for those experiencing problem gambling.
The US division of the Australia-headquartered operator worked in partnership with the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) and the Massachusetts Council on Gaming and Health on the new survey.
It was completed by 110 respondents, having been issued to attendees of the National Conference on Gambling Addiction and Responsible Gambling 2022 which took place in July.
In the anonymous and voluntary survey, respondents were asked to assume the role of an online gambling operator and select situationally appropriate responses for online bettors displaying potentially problematic gambling behavior.
The survey compilers generated five fictional customers, each with different scenarios in their respective customer journeys. Every survey respondent was required to answer 10 questions based on three customers each.
In all cases, survey participants were asked what actions they would take when confronted by each customer’s individual scenario.

Customer B is a 24-year-old male who has reached out to customer service to request bonus bets as “he has some large bills coming up which he is hoping to make some money for”. He states that he does not have a gambling addiction. He has shown steady sports betting and casino play since he opened his account 6 months ago with total losses of $5,000. Based on these details, which actions do you recommend the operator take?

Customer C is a 30-year-old male who has reached out to customer service requesting an expedited withdrawal as he needs to pay his mortgage later in the day. He has shown steady sports betting play since he opened his account 2 years ago with total losses of $75,000. Due to this figure, the operator has already validated his source of funds and has determined that he can afford this amount. Based on these details, which actions do you recommend the operator take?

Customer D is a 50-year-old male who is observed to have lost $75,000 since his account opening 10 months ago. His transactional data shows that he is placing an average of 7 sports bets per day and that he occasionally plays in the online casino. During previous responsible gambling check ins, he has stated that he is in control of his gambling and aware of support and recovery tools should he ever need them. Due to his high net loss, the operator has already validated his source of funds and has determined that he can afford this amount. Based on these details, which actions do you recommend the operator take?
