Date set for federal ban bill hearing
Adelson-backed legislation will be discussed by the House Government Oversight and Reform Committee on December 9
A bill seeking to ban most forms of online gaming in the US at a federal level has been scheduled for a hearing on December 9 in the House Government Oversight and Reform Committee. [private]
The hearing has been titled âA Casino in Every Smartphone â Law Enforcement Implicationsâ and will discuss legislation introduced earlier this year seeking to restore the Wire Act and ban egaming.
The bill â HR 707 â was introduced by Committee chairman Rep. Jason Chaffetz and has the backing of billionaire casino mogul and anti-egaming campaigner Sheldon Adelson.
HR 707 would force states such as New Jersey, Nevada and Delaware where egaming is legal and regulated to close down their sites.
The Committee has yet to publish a list of witnesses who will provide testimony at next weekâs hearing, but based on a hearing back in March the majority will be in favor of a ban.
It is the second time that Chaffetz and Adelson have championed a bill seeking to ban internet gambling in the US, with last yearâs efforts failing in the final hours of the Lame Duck session.
