Weekend Review: Leicester City delivers early Christmas present for bookies
Layers hail “great” weekend as top dogs Liverpool and Man City both fail to win
Manchester City’s shock defeat to struggling Leicester City and a split decision win for boxer Dillan Whyte provided bookies with an early Christmas present this weekend.
It was a “great” weekend for BetVictor, with the bookie thankful for Leicester City and West Ham providing upsets against Manchester City and Liverpool respectively.
“Santa came early with the weekend Premier League results with the defeat of Manchester City on Saturday and Liverpool’s draw knocking out so many, hitherto, winning accas,” said BetVictor’s Charlie McCann.
The Hammers provided Unibet with a “big favour” in knocking out a large number of accumulators over the weekend and providing a strong margin.
“We were happy to see West Brom only lose by the narrowest of margins, but goals in the Burnley and Watford matches did cost us,” added Unibet’s William Vickery.
And William Hill said it was a much-improved weekend for them, despite the high number of goals being scored over the last few days.
“On Sunday we were really staring at heavy losses with favourites Chelsea, Man Utd, Southampton and derby all winning but, not for the first time, Liverpool came to our rescue with their failure to beat West Ham,” William Hill’s Rupert Adams said.
“PSG’s late draw at home to Nice was also a welcome result, especially online.
“Overall it was a good weekend for the company and very welcome after a string of weekends where the punters have got the better of us.”
Saturday night saw boxing take centre stage with Anthony Joshua defending his world title against Eric Molina in what was a routine win for the Brit.
However, bookies found there was more interest in the undercard between Dillian Whyte and Derek Chisora, and it was good news for the layers as the fight went the distance with Whyte recording a split-decision victory.
“In the terrific boxing from Saturday night we took good live turnover from the Chisora versus Whyte showdown where we saw money for Chisora pre-match and this continued once the fight stared as Del Boy looked to mean business,” said Vickery.
“Overall we had a good margin from the weekends boxing including another routine defence for Joshua.”
BetVictor’s Charlie McCann added: “Boxing was a winner too with the White versus Chisora fight a massive winner as it went the distance. Fine margins and all the profits and more would have gone had Joshua waited another round to send Molina packing.
“For some reason round four was a massive loser and AJ’s third round knock was cheered loudly and the traders had their chest puffed out after a good night’s work as they headed to the office party.”
