Weekend Review: Bookies celebrate “unbelievable” weekend of Premier League results

Everything fell into place for the bookmakers this weekend as Premier League punters were undone by several shocking results.

Back-to-back champions Manchester City lost 2-0 at home to Wolves, which handed an eight-point advantage to title rivals Liverpool after the Reds beat Leicester City 2-1.

Tottenham’s terrible slump in form continued with a 3-0 defeat at Brighton after losing 7-2 to German giants Bayern Munich during the week.

Manchester United also lost 1-0 to struggling Newcastle United, while Chelsea and Arsenal recorded wins over South Coast pair Southampton and Bournemouth to keep their top four hopes alive.

Kindred Group’s Ali Gill said: “It was an unbelievable weekend for us in the Premier League as we came out ahead in every game.

“Spurs’ 3-0 loss to Brighton was by a distance our biggest winner, but both Manchester clubs losing hit the punters hard too.

“Even Liverpool and Arsenal’s narrow wins left us in the black. It goes without saying that with that set of results, there were very few accas flying in either,” he added.

It was a similar story at William Hill where Rupert Adams said: “It was a fantastic footie weekend with bookie-friendly results.

“Liverpool are now clear favourites for the Prem and they were very well backed to win it before the start of the season.”

Betway’s Chad Yeomans said this weekend made up for last week’s punter-friendly results. He added: “This week swung in our favour with Man City falling short at home to Wolves.

“To add to this, there were only three winning favourite in the Premier League all weekend, with results going in our favour on the live TV matches.”

According to Betfred spokesperson Peter Spencer, one football punter stuck £10 on Wolves to beat Man City 2-0 at odds of 125/1.

Betfred punters also turned their attention to this year’s Sports Personality of the Year competition to be held in Aberdeen on 15 December.

Ben Stokes is the 2/7 favourite after his batting heroics during the Cricket World Cup and England’s drawn Ashes test, while Dina Asher-Smith has come into 6/1 after becoming the first female UK athlete to win three medals at the Athletics World Championships.

Spencer added: “England rugby union captain Owen Farrell is currently at odds of 25/1, but those are likely to come in dramatically should Eddie Jones’ side win the ongoing World Cup.”

Sticking with rugby, England’s comfortable win over Argentina left Kindred close to even, while France’s narrow win over Tonga was the operator’s biggest rugby win of the weekend.

In the horseracing, Hills’ Adams added: “Saturday racing was terrible – losing seven figures after 5 faves in a row won.”

However the firm made it back Sunday as Enable and Bataash failed to fire in France.
