Weekend Review: Bookies bemoan worst Premier League weekend of the season
The layers take a battering as Liverpool and Manchester United win by most popular scoreline
Liverpool moved eight points clear at the top of the Premier League table yesterday after their 3-1 win over Manchester City piled misery on UK bookmakers.
The layers experienced their worst top-flight football weekend of the season as a host of favourites won by popular scorelines, including Manchester United’s 3-1 victory at home to Brighton.

Kindred Group’s Ali Gill said: “It was a weekend for the punters this week in the Premier League as they ran away with the overall result.
“Liverpool’s win over City was by far and away our biggest loss of the round and the weekend overall as the Reds were very well supported at home.
“Man Utd’s win over Brighton also put a sizeable dent in the weekend figures, while Wolves’ victory over local rivals Villa was another big win for punters as we lost in six of the nine games,” he added.
It was a similar story for William Hill where Rupert Adams revealed that Tottenham’s 1-1 draw with Sheffield United was the only silver lining of a very costly weekend on the football, despite VAR taking centre stage once again.

Adams said: “Yesterday was a shocker with nine of the 10 top spots all going to the punters.
“The Liverpool game was all for Liverpool pre-match and the two early goals killed it as a betting event.
“Saturday was also a bad day but at least Spurs saved us from complete disaster,” he added.
Elsewhere, Betdaq’s Mark Harkin said: “It looks very much advantage Liverpool in the Premier League title race after their 3-1 win over Manchester City on Sunday.
“The victory was cheered on by one Betdaq punter who scooped £6,314 having staked £330 on that scoreline at 20.13.”
Betfred reported one of the worst days of the Premier League season so far with the bookmaker close to making a six-figure loss, as 3-1 was the most popular scoreline bet on Manchester United’s clash with Brighton and Liverpool’s win over City. Both came in.
“This weekend was particularly grim as a we lost shedloads in a big win for the punters,” said Betfred’s Peter Spencer.
Spencer also revealed a major upturn in betting on politics this weekend, with the Tories now 1-9 to win the most seats in December’s general election.

The odds have shortened from last week’s 1-5 after the latest polls suggested Labour could lose seats in Wales and Northern England.
“The party’s unclear Brexit policy is hindering them,” added Spencer.
