Weekend Review: Best possible bank holiday for the bookies

The penultimate weekend of the Premier League season saw the top four teams fail to score a single goal between them as bank holiday betting went the way of the layers.

The signs were clear on Friday night when second place Manchester United suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Brighton as the south coast side secured their top flight status for another season.

Champions Manchester City labored to a 0-0 draw with struggling Huddersfield Town on Saturday before Tottenham lost 1-0 to West Brom and Chelsea defeated Liverpool by the same scoreline.

Kindred Group’s Ali Gill said: “It was a bank holiday weekend that could hardly have gone better for Kindred in the Premier League.

“We had nine winning results out of the 10 games played and also two huge shocks, with Brighton’s win over Man Utd ending as one of our best results of the season.

“Interestingly, Chelsea’s 1-0 win over Liverpool was comfortably our second biggest win in the PL this weekend, driven by the one goal game,” he added.

It was a similar story at BetVictor where Charlie McCann told EGR: It was a great weekend on the football front, from Brighton’s win against United on the Friday to the 2-2 draw in El Clasico between Barcelona and Real Madrid.

“It was all one-way traffic going into the final week of the domestic season.”

BetVictor punters also suffered in the boxing after backing David Haye to take revenge on Tony Bellew in their big rematch in London on Saturday night.

“Punters didn’t learn from the first fight and an ill-prepared David Haye was backed off the boards against Tony Bellew who easily disposed of yesterday’s man,” said McCann.

“The fight wasn’t quite as popular as the first one – but the result was the same and a cracking night for the books,” he added.

Elsewhere, Mark Williams triumphed in the final of the Snooker World Championships with an 18-16 victory over fellow veteran John Higgins.

Gill said: “The snooker came to a hugely dramatic, if not ‘old school feeling’ end when two previous winning ‘40+ers’ took to the cloth in the final.

“Mark Williams came out ahead which ultimately cost us on the night, although the make-up of the final meant we were always more than safe on the outrights and ended in a healthy position.”
