UNLV launches month-long study into US online gambling market
GVC Foundation US-funded study will examine key questions by policymakers and stakeholders into the US industry
Researchers from the University of Las Vegas’ International Gaming Institute (UNLV-IGI) have begun a month-long study into the most important questions asked by US policymakers and stakeholders when understanding online gambling and sports betting.
The research, funded by the advocacy and integrity body GVC Foundation US, is entitled ‘The Big Questions: Online Gambling and Sports Wagering’ and will aim to provide these groups with the up-to-date, evidence-based, scientific information to inform conversations.
In addition, researchers will investigate the US gambling market’s structure to propose a responsible, sustainable way forward through implementing regulatory best practices in the post-Covid world.
UNLV-IGI executive director Bo Bernhard highlighted the question of legalising online gambling and sports betting as one of the biggest questions facing US legislators and state officials.
“The good news is that research teams from all over the world have been advancing our understanding of the key issues at play here, and we look forward to providing a critical evaluation of these research findings to help policymakers make the best decisions possible,” said Bernhard.
Online gambling and sports betting legalisation efforts have led to varying degrees of success in the US, with many Eastern states choosing to embrace regulation, while their Western counterparts do not.
Addressing this situation, GVC director of regulatory affairs and trustee of GVC Foundation US Martin Lycka, said: “We’re at a crucial point in the development of US gambling. Covid-19 has disrupted every area of life, including professional sports, mental health, and betting markets, and it’s more important than ever that we chart the course of this impactful industry.
“Addressing challenges currently facing the gambling industry will lead to better outcomes for all,” Lycka added.
GVC Foundation US aims to advance US sports betting and online gambling regulation while maintaining integrity and boosting education on gambling throughout the states.
An initial report will be issued by 31 July, with a more detailed report published in the autumn.
