Sweden’s gambling revenue grows almost 5% in Q3
Easing of Covid restrictions helps growth continue, although revenue dipped slightly on industry-wide Q2 revenue
Sweden’s licensed gambling industry generated SEK6.3bn (£526m) in revenue for the third quarter, an increase of nearly 5% on the same period in 2020. The figure, while an improvement on Q3 2020, was down slightly from the SEK6.5bn generated in Q2 of this year. Casino and betting accounted for 61.8% (SEK3.9bn) of all revenue, with state lottery and slot machine games making up 21.9% (SEK1.39bn) of the total. Elsewhere, Casino Cosmopol, Sweden’s only land-based casino operator, posted revenue figures (SEK132m) for the first time since Q1 2020 after having reopened all operations on 7 July and with further restrictions on the number of guests lifted on 29 September. Games for public benefit and national lotteries were up YoY from SEK771m to SEK803m in Q3 2021. As of September 2021, 95 companies held Swedish licences, 65 of which were licensed for betting and/or commercial online gambling. At the end of the third quarter, approximately 65,500 people had self-excluded themselves through Spelpaus, Sweden’s self-exclusion platform. That figure has risen by around 1,500 from just under 64,000 at the end of Q2 2020.
