Portuguese gross gaming revenue up 48% in Q1 2020
Online gaming overtakes sports betting to become biggest revenue driver, according to latest figures from SRIJ
Portugal’s gross gaming revenue (GGR) rose 47.5% year-on-year for Q1 2020 to €68.9m, according to new data released by the country’s regulator SRIJ.
As well as growing exponentially year-on-year, Q1 2020 revenue also marked an increase on Q4 2019 of €4.4m.
Sports betting accounted for €34.5m for the period after a €9.7m year-on-year increase.
Football continued to make up the majority of the vertical with 74.4% of bets taken in the quarter. Basketball was the second most popular sport (11.1%) with tennis coming in third (9.1%).
Online gambling revenues continued to increase steadily, up to €35.3m for Q1 2020, an increase of €3.3m from Q4 2019 and a year-on-year increase of €12.8m.
Slot games dominated the market with 69.8% of stakes for the quarter, while French roulette (12.6%) and poker (7.9%) made up the top three most popular games.
New player registrations grew year-on-year to 157,400, compared to 125,200 in Q1 2019. Sign-ups however dipped from Q4 2019, which were recorded at 163,900.
A majority of Portuguese players (38.2%) are in the 25-34 age group, while the demographic with the most new registrations is 18-24 (29.9%).
The number of players choosing to self-exclude also continued to rise up to 52,100 from 35,400 in Q1 2019.
A total of 73 letters were sent by the SRIJ to illegal operators requiring them to cease offering egaming to Portuguese players without a licence during the quarter. The ISPs of 61 operators were blocked by the SRIJ during the period.
