Portuguese GGR up 39% in Q3 as casino and betting both rise
Double-digit rises reported in both key verticals for online market
Gross gaming revenue (GGR) from the regulated Portuguese market rose 39.1% year-on-year during Q3 2019 to €54m, according to latest figures released by the regulator (SRIJ).
Online casino revenues rose 45.2% year-on-year in the third quarter to €28.2m, an increase of €8.8m on the revenues returned during the same period of 2018.
Portuguese players staked €741.5m on online casino sites during Q3, a rise of 33.8% year-on-year on Q3 stake volumes. Of these stakes, 67.7% were wagered on online casino gaming sites.
A total of 13.2% of wagered stakes were placed on French roulette games, with a further 8.1% of stakes being placed on blackjack gaming and 7.5% being placed on poker respectively.
Sports betting revenues also rose sharply by 33% year-on-year to €25.9m, an increase of €6.5m on the GGR reported during the same period of 2018.
Total sports bets placed during Q3 amounted to €114m, a year-on-year increase of 26.5%.
Of these bets, 77.5% of those placed were on football, with 16.9% being placed on tennis and the remaining 5.6% on other sports.
A total of 149,000 new players registered with Portuguese online gambling operators during Q3 2019, up 78% from the same period in 2018. A total of 354,100 individuals placed bets with online sports betting operators during Q3.
SRIJ officials sent 24 notifications to operators asking them to cease serving Portuguese players during Q3, blocking the ISPs of 12 sites in the same period.
