Portugal reaches record GGR of €84.2m in Q3 2020
Iberian nation reports 55.7% uptick in third quarter revenue as football dominates sports betting wagers

Gross gambling revenue (GGR) in Portugal rose by 55.7% in Q3 2020 to reach a record €84.2m, according to the latest figures from the country’s gambling regulator. The SRIJ revealed that GGR derived from sports betting and games of chance both leapt more than 40% year-on-year (YoY) from Q3 2019. Sports betting raked in €42.5m in revenue in Q3 2020, an increase of 64.4% from just €25.9m in Q3 2019.
Portuguese sports bettors plunged €222.8m in wagers in Q3 2020, more than double the €114m wagered on sports betting in Q3 2019. Football accounted for 79.13% of total amounts wagered in Portuguese sports betting during Q3 2020, with tennis (11.79%) and basketball (6.51%) taking up podium places for most popular sport. Revenue from games of chance jumped 47.8% YoY from €28.2m in Q3 2019 to €41.7m in Q3 2020, with €1.18bn spent on online games during the reporting period. Elsewhere, 156,800 new users registered to play in Portugal during Q3, an increase both YoY from 149,000 in Q3 2019 and quarter-on-quarter from 130,300 in Q2 2020. The number of players choosing to self-exclude from online gaming rose to 62,100 in Q3 2020, with the number having increased with each reporting period since Q3 2019. The SRIJ also confirmed that there were now 24 licensed operators in the market, an annual increase of six from the 18 confirmed in Q3 2019. Finally, the regulator handed out 29 closing notifications to illegal operators in Q3, bringing the total amount of notices since their introduction in 2015 to 665.Related Articles
