Poll: Will Wire Act clarification prompt federal or intrastate progress?
Will we see federal progress, state-by-state progress, or neither?
With the United States Department of Justice clarifying last month that the Wire Act does not apply to online poker and other non-egaming sports, federal politicians have been encouraged to step up the push for regulation of the US market.
Poker Players Alliance Chairman Alfonse D’Amato said: “We urge members of Congress to act quickly based on [the] announcement and pass legislation like H.R. 2366 to license and regulate online poker at the federal level.”
However with many of the country’s states having already begun to pursue egaming on an intrastate level, might politicians see the clarification as a green light to push forward their own policies in a bid to create what New Jersey Senator Raymond Lesniak has called, in his own state, a “Silicon Valley of gaming?”
With state policy-makers given this fillip, could a federal framework now be deemed unnecessary? What do you think is the more likely scenario “ federal progress or movement on a state-by-state level?
“¢ Progress on federal poker regulation
“¢ Progress on intrastate egaming legislation
“¢ Positive signals but, in a Presidential election year, little progress
