Poll results: Euro regulations should be harmonised
Respondents to this week's poll make it clear closer alignment of European regulations would help the industry
Closer harmonisation of European online gaming and gambling regulations would benefit the industry, according to more than three quarters of respondents to this week’s poll.
Last week eGaming Review reported that the European Commission had tasked Big Four accountancy firm PwC to explore ways in which the continent’s myriad of online regulations could be aligned in order to increase cross-border cooperation.
As part of the 10-month study, PwC will look at the current approach of 32 EU and EEA member states in order to highlight areas which could be standardised.
The make-up of regulatory frameworks across Europe currently vary from country to country, something which has made it increasingly difficult for operators to remain fully compliant, while licence applications processes can often be repetitive and time consuming.
And 76% of respondents to this week’s poll felt that potential harmonisation, such as an EU-wide standard for gambling and gaming software, would assist the industry.
Only 17% of readers said that greater alignment of cross-border regulations would be to the detriment of online gambling industry, with some operators having already invested significant sums in order to meet requirements as they currently stand.
Meanwhile the remaining 7% of respondents sat on the fence having stated that any regulatory alignment was likely to have a negligible impact on the industry.
