Poll: Are the days of single-vertical operators over?
This week we ask whether a wide range of products is needed to survive in the modern egaming industry
The launch of online sportsbook Black Type earlier this month was interesting for several reasons, but one factor that flew under the radar was its focus solely on sports betting.
Unlike established rivals, Black Type offers no casino games or poker platform, preferring to market itself around a minimum bet liability sportsbook proposition.
The single-vertical focus makes Black Type almost unique in the sector, and it’s a similar story in other verticals, with Casumo and mFortune among the few casino-only operators.
But the industry appears to be trending in the opposite direction, with PokerStars now reaping 20% of total revenue from its casino, tombola recently launching Arcade, and former casino-only operators LeoVegas and Mr Green moving into sportsbook.
The simplicity and availability of third-party provided products is obviously contributing to this shift, while firms are also increasingly aware of the cross-sell and acquisition benefits of a variety of offerings.
With that in mind, this week’s poll asks whether a wide product portfolio is now the only way to be a successful egaming company. Or, can firms differentiate themselves by focusing on one vertical and building a quality product that can beat off-the-shelf rivals?
