Paf embarks on open source tech project
Åland-based operator targets greater tech engagement and stronger security with upgrade
Paf has hailed its transition into so-called open source technology as an “important milestone” for the business.
The Åland-based operator, which contributes to social and charitable groups across its native territory, has started an open source project, creating a page for contributions on the Github website.
All software consists of programs that are written by software developers who write source codes, however open sourcing means making the source code publicly available to allow for wider contributions.
There are two ways to contribute, by open sourcing employees’ own projects or by contributing to existing projects. Paf’s open source project is ISO27001 certified.
In tandem with this, Paf operates a public Technology Radar system, which covers the entire Paf technology portfolio, giving employees an at-a-glance look at technologies being assessed, trialled, implemented or put on hold.
“When you open source your projects you are putting your name on the tech radar,” Paf CTO Francois Maugis said.
“Developers in the world will know who you are and what you do, and the level of excellence that you produce.
“At the same time, you are welcoming these developers to also contribute into your projects, generating a synergy where everyone is benefited,” Maugis added.
Global businesses using open source technology include Google, Microsoft, Facebook and Amazon.
While open sourcing projects make company information and data freely available and potentially more accessible to hackers, open sourcing can improve security by allowing more users to participate and generate new ideas which can enhance existing methods.
“Some Paf employees have already contributed to Open Source projects like the Linux operating system. Soon, most of the Android devices and web servers in the world will include these contributions,” Paf senior software engineer Jukka Palomäki said.
