Online sports betting sector worth ?38.5m in Q1 as regulator reveals online/offline split for first time
Online accounts for nearly two-thirds of the Danish sports betting market according to the first set of figures that officially quantify the online/offline split.
According to numbers released by the Danish Gambling Authority, gross gaming revenue (GGR) for online betting reached DKK 370m (?38.5m) in Q1, equivalent to 63.5% of the overall betting market.
Online casino was also on the rise, growing 25% year-on-year to DKK 345m (?36m). Within the vetrical, slots proved the most popular game, accounting for 68% of the online market, compared to 12% for poker, 6% for roulette and 5% for blackjack.
The quarterly data is based on duty payments from all licence holders, which the regulator estimates make up 95% of the market.
The Danish online gaming market was opened up back in 2012, with 27 licensees holding 15 licences for betting and 25 licences for online casino as of April 2016.
The regulator also reported that the number of people registered in ROFUS, a list where players can voluntarily exclude themselves from gambling sites, had been rising consistently.
At the beginning of March 2016, around 6,700 people were registered in ROFUS, with around 70% having excluded themselves permanently.
