Oddschecker: Gulf opens between top and bottom half of table
Significant market share growth from BetVictor and William Hill sees gap of 2% open between fifth and sixth place.
Market share growth from BetVictor and William Hill has seen a notable gap begin to open up between the top and bottom halves of the table, September’s Oddschecker Top 10 has shown.
Despite last month seeing no movement in any of the top 10 rankings, fourth-place Hills (up 0.53% to 7.72%) and BetVictor (one place behind with its 7.44% share representing an increase of 0.57%) are almost two full percentage points clear of sixth-placed Stan James (5.50%), with their growth largely attributed to football.
BetVictor’s rise coincides with a marketing push, sparked by a new TV advertising campaign featuring comedian Paul Kaye which was launched in August.
The gains from the two operators have come at the expense of Betfair and bet365, that have held onto the top two spots despite dropping by 0.46% and 0.66% respectively, with bet365 falling by 1.5% in its traditionally fruitful UK football market. This was despite Betfair recording a record 25% share of bets on the US Open tennis final, where Andy Murray defeated Novak Djokovic.
Among the other major sporting events during the month was Europe’s victory over the United States in the Ryder Cup, where Ladbrokes and Skybet fared best. Percentage shares for golf for the two operators more than doubled their run rate in September.
