KSA hands out five-figure fine to Netherland’s state lottery operator
Dutch regulator clamps down for targets minors with advertising
The Dutch Gambling Authority (KSA) has meted out a €10,000 fine to state lottery operator Nederlandse Loterij (NLO) for breaking advertising regulations.
The fine relates the NLO’s Lotto brand after it placed advertisements for its EuroJackpot game on girlscene.nl, a website with an adolescent audience.
In the Netherlands, the law prohibits advertising of games of chance to minors.
Along with the fine, the KSA imposed a cease-and-desist order on Lotto for placing the advertisements in a move to prevent similar efforts being undertaken by the operator.
The KSA said: “The KSA continues to monitor whether games of chance providers target vulnerable groups, such as minors, with their advertisements. If this is the case, the KSA can take enforcement action.
“Providers are always responsible for all their advertisements, even if they have their advertisements taken care of via third parties such as advertising agencies.”
Last month, the KSA issued a similar cease and desist order to the Dutch state lottery over its use of professional footballers in Euro 2020 advertising material.
The offending material, which launched on 25 May, featured current Eredivisie stars, as well as several Dutch national team players.
Under regulations, Dutch licence holders are barred from using professional athletes in advertising.
