iOS8 includes code for split-screen functionality
Code found within SDK allows for two apps to be run simultaneously with reports suggesting the functionality could be added in full within iOS8.1
Code found within Appleâs iOS8 software enables split-screen functionality, allowing for two applications to be run simultaneously by the same device.
Split screen functionality would potentially be a big opportunity for gambling operators and for in-play betting in particular, with customers able to stream sporting events and have a sportsbook app open at the same time.
Most sportsbook operators have looked to add live streaming to their app capabilities but the rights to particular events, such as the Premier League and Champions League, are held exclusively by Sky Sports and BT Sport.
Speaking to eGR Mobile Intelligence Chris Sheffield, managing director of Betfred Digital, said that the potential to have two apps running at the same time would cause operators to âlook at tablets in a different wayâ.
The feature has long been rumoured but was absent during last weekâs WWDC, fuelling speculation that Apple had moved away from adding split screen capabilities to the iPad.
However the first software development kit includes code for the capability – as found by developer Steve Troughton-Smith – allowing for two apps to run side-by-side taking up half of the screen each or in a quarter and three-quarter split.
Apple-focused news service 9to5Mac has reported that some features intended for iOS8 were not deemed ready enough to be included in the first reveal last week and may be held back for a later update.
