EA Sports reels back loot box feature in FIFA 22
Game publisher introduces preview packs on Ultimate Team mode as it moves to more transparent model
EA Sports has confirmed its upcoming FIFA 22 title will include preview packs for FIFA Ultimate Team (FUT) from launch.
Preview packs allow players to view the contents of RNG FUT packs before deciding whether to buy them with cash.
In the game mode, players purchase packs of randomly generated real-life players for money to build their teams, without knowing which players are in each pack.
The new preview feature, which was initially tested in a temporary roll-out in June on the company’s FIFA 21 title, will now be introduced as standard.
In a statement, EA said: “Following a positive reception from fans after their introduction in FIFA 21, Preview Packs will be available in FIFA 22 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Stadia and PC.
“As a reminder, Preview Packs are a pack type that allow you to see all the specific items contained within. Once you have seen what is in the pack, you can choose to buy the pack, with either FUT Coins or FIFA Points.”
However, the preview packs feature will only be available across premium gold and premium silver packs.
This means more expensive packs, including special edition packs, will not show previews for customers and will still retain their loot box nature during seasonal promotions around Christmas and Black Friday, for example.
