Danske Spil appoints former defence minister as new chairman
Former Danish defence minister Peter Christensen hired to lead Danish monopoly operator’s board of directors
Danish monopoly gaming and sports betting operator Danske Spil has installed Peter Christensen as its new chairman.
The appointment was confirmed by the Danish Minister of Finance, Nikolai Wammen.
At present, the Danish government owns 80% of the firm, with the Danish Sports Association (DIF) and the Danish Gymnastics and Sports Associations (DGI) each owning the remaining 20% of the business.
Christensen currently serves as chairman of the Danish Class lottery, although he will step down from this position some time during H2 2020.
A former MP and civil servant with 14 years’ experience in the Danish government, Christensen notably served as Danish minister of defence between September 2015 and December 2016.
Addressing his new role, Christensen said he was proud and felt privileged to secure Danske Spil’s ongoing contribution to Danish social causes.
“Danske Spil has an important social role in continuing to ensure a balanced and responsible gaming market in Denmark,” he said.
“We must prevent ludomania and protect our young people so that the game does not take power and end in addiction, and also ensure games are not abused for crime such as money laundering. [Danske Spil] must set the standard for responsible gaming in Denmark,” Christensen added.
