Android winning UK tablet fight
Apple loses market share to affordable Android tabletsÂ
A wide range of affordable Android tablets helped Google take 56% of market share of the UK tablet market, leaving Appleâs iPad range clutching at 38%, during the the first 9 months of 2013.
According to analysts at IDC, 7.6 million tablets were shipped to the UK, an impressive year-on-year growth of 192% from the same period in 2012.
But for the first time since the original iPad launched, Apple lost market share to its Android counterparts.
Itâs likely this trend is set to continue with UK shoppers quick to adopt affordable cheaper offerings.
On the high street Argos and Aldi launched their own low-end Android offerings but it was Tescoâs Hudl tablet priced at £119 that led the pack, selling 300,000 units in its first two months following its October launch.
Despite Android winning the largest market share and Google Play Store recently becoming the largest app store, it seems that revenue share still differentiates between the two app marketplaces.
A report from Distimo revealed that Appleâs share of app store revenue remained higher at 63 per cent, with the Googleâs Play Store standing at 37 per cent.
It is yet unknown if the iPad was able to claw back any share during the final three months of year and the crucial Christmas period, but looking at Hudl sales figures it seems unlikely.
