Optimove iGaming Pulse Report: Average deposit amounts up 6% for sports betting
In a monthly column, Optimove shares the latest insights from its iGaming Pulse Report looking at how casino and sports KPIs performed in January

We’re off to a brand-new year and a fresh new start. But what does it all mean for the online casino and sports betting verticals? Find out by taking a look at the exact numbers below.
Sports KPIs
Average deposit amount
The average deposit amount increased by 6% MoM and by a huge 28% YoY, now standing at €36 per player.
South America’s premier club football tournament, the Copa Libertadores finals took place in January. Taking a look at the numbers in Peru, we can see that the average deposit amount per player increased by 10% MoM – perhaps those who placed numerous bets on these exciting finals.
Monthly deposits
The average number of monthly deposits for sports bettors slightly decreased by 3% MoM and increased by 4% YoY.
Net gaming revenue per player
There has been a decrease of 9% MoM in average revenue per active player during January, and an increase of 7% YoY, now standing at €87 per player.
Retention rates
Retention rates for sports bettors have slightly decreased by 7% MoM and increased by 2% YoY.
New retention rates
New retention rates have decreased by 5% MoM but significantly increased by 17% YoY, now standing at 42%.
Conversion rates
Conversion rates increased by 2% MoM and by 17% YoY, now standing at 42%.
Number of activity days
The number of activity days is explained as when a player places either a bet or makes a deposit during a specific month. As you can see in the graph below, since April (the time of the outbreak of Covid-19) we can see an increasing trend in the number of activity days per player. This month, it increased by 1% MoM and by 13% YoY, now standing at 8.5 activity days per player.
Casino KPIs
Average deposit amount
The average deposit amount for casino players increased by 9% MoM and by 12% YoY, now standing at €38.
Monthly deposit per player
The average number of monthly deposits per player in January slightly decreased by 5% MoM but increased by 4% YoY, now standing at 9.7 deposits per player.
Monthly revenue
The average net gaming revenue per active player in January decreased by 4% MoM while we can see a significant increase of 22% YoY. Perhaps a continuation of last month’s successful Christmas/holiday season promotions generated higher monthly revenue.
Conversion rates
Conversion rates slightly increased by 2% MoM and more significantly increased by 30% YoY. Last year in January 2020, conversion rates stood at 33% and this January 2021, they stand at 43% – further proving a relatively strong month for operators.
Retention rates
Retention rates increased by 3% MoM and by 11% YoY.
Mobile bettors ratio
This KPI is defined as the number of mobile bettors divided by the total number of bettors during the month of January – for this specific report. The ratio decreased by 6% MoM and increased by 4% YoY.
