Oddschecker insights: Bet365 tops the charts for Grand National and the Masters
Stoke-on-Trent-based operator garners most clickthroughs for some of April’s noteworthy sporting events
April’s oddschecker data focused on major events on both sides of the Atlantic, with the Grand National returning a shock winner and the Masters taking place at Augusta.
Bet365 was the main choice for punters with a clickshare of 29%. This can be attributed to two factors: one being that its overround for the race was 127%, 9pp lower than its nearest rival Betway, and secondly the Stoke-on-Trent-based firm offered a market-leading “up to £125 of your stake back” for all customers.
Sky Bet were the second most popular site for clickthroughs for the event, with a 10% clickshare having offered seven places.
Paddy Power ended with an 8% clickshare, ahead of the likes of William Hill (7%) and Coral, Betfair Sportsbook and Betfred with 5%.
Sam Waley-Cohen won the race on his final ride, Noble Yeats, which came in at a cool 66/1. However, shrewd punters could have backed the winner at 79/1 with Smarkets, the top price at 11am on oddschecker.
The Masters signalled the first golf Major of the year as Scottie Scheffler lifted his fourth title in six events.
After offering 11 places on the tournament, Sky Bet claimed the second-most clicks at 15.4%, behind bet365 with 21.6%.
The strategy to offer 11 places did not return the same results for Irish bookmaker BoyleSports in terms of clickshare, with oddschecker noting its higher 180% overround compared to Sky Bet’s 168%.
SportNation took an altogether different approach, only offering five places to customers, but did boast the best odds on the top 20 selections in the market and the lowest overround of the sportsbooks at 124%.
The exchanges were the place to go for win-only with Betfair Exchange, Smarkets and Matchbook overrounds equating to 106%, 110% and 110%, respectively.
Parimatch were the big movers of the month with a 91% increase in customer acquisition compared to March.
Elsewhere, Spreadex recorded an increase of 0.7pp in terms of clickshare, while bet365 increased its total betshare by 2.1pp.
Oddschecker itself saw an April decrease of 31% in registration from March, however that can be attributed to the Cheltenham Festival taking place in March. In comparison, registrations year on year were up 35%.
