Friday view: The tech opportunity
Neill Whyte, head of product channels at Microgaming, discusses the technology boom for the mobile sector and what it might mean for gambling firms
Mobile, mobile, mobile – itâs what everyone in the online gaming industry is currently talking about. But itâs not surprising considering that over the last year or so mobile gaming has reached its tipping point. In 2012, the mobile games market was valued by H2 Gambling Capitalat around â¬4.5 billion (in gross win) and by 2018 it is expected to generate over â¬19 billion. So, in the space of six years, thatâs an estimated increase of over 300%!
Why have we seen such rapid growth? The increased demand for Smartphone and tablet devices and the proliferation of broadband and subsequent access to WiFi have played a huge part. But arguably the biggest overall impact has been technology and its enormous advances. And itâs technology that will continue to be the driving force of our industry for years to come.
What was once dominated by fitness trackers, the wearable tech industry has expanded over the last few years to include the likes of Smart Glasses and Smart Watches. Whilst the market is still in its early stages, in recognition of its vast potential, technology giants such as Samsung and Google are all vying to become key players. It is a market that is projected to grow considerably over the coming years, but what does this mean for the online gaming industry?
It certainly presents an exciting new way for software providers like Microgaming to deliver gaming content. Take the virtual reality technology of Oculus Rift for example â through 3D rendered imagery and 360-degree viewing, this kit can offer a fully immersive and unique gaming experience.
As for Smart Watches, they add another extension to the portfolio of touch-screen devices already available in the marketplace. There is the challenge of a different screen size, resolution and processing power to contend with, but itâs certainly possible to take an online slot and adapt it for use on a Smart Watch. Weâve already done it. In fact weâve been exploring wearable devices for some time now.
From wristbands to watches, to glasses, this futuristic technology presents an exciting opportunity for the online gaming market. Whether it becomes mainstream or not, only time will tell, but weâre ready for it.
