Analysis: Super eight
Appleâs iOS8, although still in beta and not expected to launch with consumers until the autumn, is already giving operators plenty to think about
When Apple first revealed the next edition of its operating software at the firmâs WWDC in early June, the firm announced little that would have gambling operators itching to get their hands on the first SDKs. While the second version of the iOS8 beta, released to developers on 17 June, isnât thought to have included anything new that would be particularly ground breaking, it did however provide glimpses at tools that may be useful.
Improvements to the Safari web browser mean that users will be able to block adverts that redirect them to App Store listings should they wish to, while the TestFlight system allows developers to let a select few â limited to 1,000 â test their app in a controlled environment, providing a simple method for soft launching new apps.
Apple has also provided a hint at future capabilities by providing music search app Shazam to access the iPhoneâs auto-start capabilities, initially added to the iPhoneâs Siri function. The widespread use of the functionality has long been anticipated, and could lead to customers being able to interact with a far greater range of apps â including betting and gaming ones â through a series of voice commands.
One screen, two apps
Although fairly limited for iPhones and particularly Appleâs range of tablet devices, the introduction of Siri to other apps could provide more opportunities for apps on Appleâs much-vaunted iWatch and other wearable technology Apple may have in the pipeline.
Arguably the most exciting development for operators is the discovery of code hidden within the first release that would seemingly allow for two apps to run simultaneously on the same screen. While the code doesnât currently work â developers that uncovered the code have reported both apps to crash in its current build â its discovery has meant that operators can at least expect it at a later date.
Multi-app use has been proposed for some time and would appeal to operators that could offer two gaming sessions at the same time, or sportsbooks to run alongside a live stream of a football match or other sporting event with little to no disruption. Until Apple formally announce the capability any great deal of excitement is perhaps premature, however with little else to truly be enthused about in the initial two iOS8 builds, it may have to do.
