Apple to roll out iOS9
Updated version of mobile operating system to go live worldwide today
Apple is to begin the roll out of iOS9 today, with millions of devices expected to update to the new operating system in the coming weeks.
The majority of Apple devices will be compatible with the upgrade, although the iPhone 4 and earlier iPhones, as well as the original iPad, will not be able to run the new system.
Analysts have described iOS9 as more of an incremental step in the development of the Apple ecosystem, rather than a revolutionary redesign.
Of the new features, there is an improved and better integrated search function and Appleâs first major attempt at mobile multi-tasking, with the iPad update allowing a side-by-side split view.
Also welcome will be the improved battery life, with a new low power mode Apple says can extend use by three hours, while iOS9 will also be one of the smallest of the major Apple software upgrades to date, weighing in at just 1.5GB compared to 4.6GB of space required to install iOS8.
More controversially, iOS9 will support ad-blocking apps for the first time in a move which could force affiliates and operators to rethink mobile marketing strategies.
