PokerStars receives Danish sportsbook licence
Operator to launch a sportsbook offering "soon" with casino to follow
PokerStars has received a temporary sports betting licence from the Danish Gaming Authority and plans to apply for a full five-year permit in due course.
The operator said it would roll-out its sportsbook to players in Denmark “soon” followed by casino gaming later next year.
Stars already has an online casino licence in Denmark which it will use to continue offering poker then casino games when they launch.
PokerStars spokesman Eric Hollreiser said parent company Amaya Gaming was pleased to offer sports betting under a licence that “ensures local oversight” of the industry.
“This furthers Amaya’s commitment to the responsible growth of online gaming by supporting local regulation that protects players, creates a viable, competitive marketplace, and provides revenues for local governments,” he added.
The news comes after PokerStars recently announced it would launch a standalone BetStars sportsbook next year having taken the strategic decision to delay the roll-out of its in-client offering.
PokerStars launched its sportsbook back in March, and despite only being available in a handful of markets Amaya said it had attracted 100,000 real-money active uniques during the third quarter.
Back in September 888 made a delayed entry into the Danish market with a full suite of products having put its initial launch on hold to focus on its operations in the US.
