Report: 82% of GAMSTOP users reduce or stop gambling altogether
Independent evaluation into effectiveness of UK self-exclusion scheme shows overwhelming levels of success
The UK’s online self-exclusion scheme, GAMSTOP, has helped 82% of users stop or reduce their gambling since signing up, according to an independent evaluation. The report, compiled by research consultancy Sonnet, found the scheme had strong levels of success after conducting surveys and interviews with more than 3,300 GAMSTOP users. More than 200,000 consumers have registered with GAMSTOP since its inception in 2018. Sonnet found 84% of respondents felt safer from gambling-related harm and more in control of their gambling since registering with GAMSTOP. Additionally, 80% said the scheme had delivered on their intended outcomes, whether that be taking a short break, reducing gambling output or stopping gambling completely. Elsewhere, 77% of respondents said they felt more in control of their finances, 72% reported lower levels of stress and anxiety, and 63% found an improvement in their familial relationships. However, the report did highlight some recommendations to improve the service following suggestions from users. Longer self-exclusion periods were highlighted by 40% of users, with the maximum term currently set at five years. GAMSTOP users also wanted more research into the impact of gambling advertising on their habits, as well as responding to unlicensed gambling sites that target self-excluded users. In the report’s conclusion, Sonnet stated: “This study shows very strongly that GAMSTOP is successfully achieving a reduction in gambling-related harm with far-reaching positive impacts for consumers being clearly shown in our interviews and survey. “Our findings show that GAMSTOP is effective across all age groups, gender groups and, importantly, for all types of online gambling.” Fiona Palmer, GAMSTOP CEO, said: “We are delighted to know that vulnerable consumers who have registered with GAMSTOP have found it has helped them control their gambling and made a positive impact on their lives. “The insights in this report are extremely helpful and we welcome the opportunity to look at all suggestions for further improvements to the service, including extending the length of the maximum exclusion period to give them peace of mind that they will benefit from the long-term protection that GAMSTOP provides,” she added.
