Optimove iGaming Pulse Report: Super Bowl sees sports betting retention rates rise 5% in Canada
In a monthly column, Optimove shares the latest insights from its iGaming Pulse Report looking at how casino and sports KPIs performed in February

The 2021 Super Bowl took place this February at the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida. After a blowout of football games played by the world’s most famous NFL players, watched by hundreds of thousands of thrilled fans from across the globe – let’s see how the online casino and sports betting verticals performed.
Sports KPIs
Monthly deposits
The average number of monthly deposits for sports bettors slightly decreased by 6% MoM and remained the same YoY, now standing at nine monthly deposits per player.
Monthly net gaming revenue per player
There has been a decrease of 6% MoM in average revenue per active player during February and an increase of 6% YoY, now standing at €82 per player. In the US, the net gaming revenue increased by 4% MoM and by a whopping 26% YoY, now standing at €93 per player – clearly showing an increase in the number of bets made per American player probably due to the much-anticipated and viewed Super Bowl games.
Retention rates
Retention rates for sports bettors have slightly decreased by 2% both MoM and YoY.
New retention rates
New retention rates have decreased by 5% MoM but increased by 8% YoY, now standing at 41%.
America’s neighbours up north in Canada, who certainly love watching the Super Bowl, also played an important part in this month’s report. Looking at the data, we can see that the annual sporting event might be the reason why new customers who joined in January were retained – as new retention rates increased in Canada both MoM and YoY by 5%.
Conversion rates
Conversion rates increased by 5% MoM and by a significant 13% YoY, now standing at 44%.
Since the Super Bowl games are televised in over 130 countries in more than 30 languages, we can also see an increase in conversion rates of 10% MoM and increase of 18% YoY in the UK.
Number of activity days
This month, the number of activity days decreased by 7% MoM but increased by 5% YoY, now standing at 7.9 activity days per player.
Casino KPIs
Average deposit amount
The average deposit amount for casino players stayed the same MoM and increased by 15% YoY, now standing at €38.
Monthly deposit per player
The average number of monthly deposits per player in February slightly decreased by 5% MoM and increased by 5% YoY, now standing at 9.2 deposits per player.
Monthly revenue
The average net gaming revenue per active player in February decreased by 10% MoM while we can see an increase of 7% YoY.
Conversion rates
Conversion rates remained the same MoM but significantly increased by 19% YoY.
Retention rates
Retention rates decreased by 6% MoM but increased by 3% YoY.
Mobile bettors ratio
This KPI is defined as the number of mobile bettors divided by the total number of bettors for this specific report. Looking at the data, the ratio remained the same MoM and decreased by 4% YoY.
