Sportradar settles BetConstruct infringement case
Software provider BetConstruct agrees to pay undisclosed fee over use of unlicensed tennis data
Sportradar has settled its infringement case with BetConstruct after the latter used live tennis data from International Tennis Federation (ITF) events without a licence.
BetConstruct used live data from ITF tournaments and granted access to two of its bookmaker clients despite not getting permission or a licence from the rights holders, Sportradar.
Sportradar, which focuses on the specialist collection and management of sports data, has a partnership in place with the ITF and must be consulted over the distribution its data.
The firm launched legal proceedings against BetConstruct in September 2017 and the case has now been settled after BetConstruct agreed to pay Sportradar an undisclosed fee and take out a licence.
Sportradar said in a statement: “Sportradar has underlined its firm belief in the central importance and value of databases, and the database right, to this industry.
“As a global data and content business, we will take all necessary and available steps, in any jurisdiction, to protect its database rights against unauthorised use.”
The issue of data rights has risen to prominence in recent weeks with the expansion of the US betting market, with sports leagues, providers and operators debating whether gambling companies need to use official data from the leagues themselves.
