UNIBET expects to “definitely” win the law suit the Swedish operator faces in the French courts, chief executive Petter Nylander has told EGRmagazine.com.
Together with Bwin, 888 and Sportingbet, Unibet faces a law suit for unfair competition brought by the Barriere, Joagroupe and Tranchant casinos and the Casinos de France trade union, who allege that the four operators offering casino games contravenes current gaming legislation and new egaming laws set to come into effect in June.
However speaking to eGaming Review today, Nylander (pictured) said: “We’re relatively relaxed about the whole thing. It’s something I’m following but I’m not too worried.”
Asked whether he expects to win the case, Nylander replied, “yes, definitely.”
The casinos are pursuing a symbolic payment of 1 damages, plus 30,000 to cover their legal costs, and will ask for the publication of the court’s judgement in the main French daily newspapers should they win.
However Nylander denied that the case could damage the company’s reputation in France.
“What we can expect to see in all these re-regulating markets [such as France] is that established competitors will try all available means to protect themselves. It’s private groups versus private groups and I don’t think the law courts are the appropriate place for such moves.”
As reported on EGRmagazine.com, Bwin, Sportingbet and Unibet’s lawyers have all questioned the right of the French legal system to judge them as they are not based in France and offer French language versions of their products only among a host of different language options.
