Betting is currently illegal in India, which makes the thriving industry difficult for authorities to control. The remote Himalayan province of Sikkim in India passed the Sikkim Online Gaming (Regulation) Act in July 2008, with local companies set to receive sports betting licences. The first licences are now scheduled to be handed out later this month.
